Facilities Maintenance Assistant

Pembroke College is looking for a Facilities Maintenance Assistant to provide prompt, hands-on maintenance support to the Facilities Management department, in support of the College operation, both at the main College site and at the nearby Sir Geoffrey Arthur Building annexe. This can be a physically demanding role and requires the candidate to be flexible when approaching their working day, in order to meet the varied requirements and demands of a busy College. Designated tasks must be completed to a high standard and often within tight timescales. The individual will provide cover in the absence of other team members and liaison and communication with the Maintenance Supervisor, fellow team members, Fellows, students and staff. They will be reliable, enthusiastic and self-motivated, able to work within a team and under their own initiative. The ability to manage a moderately physically demanding workload is also essential.


Main duties include:
Liaise with Fellows, staff, students and visitors in a courteous and helpful manner at all times.
Work unsupervised, and as part of a team.
Be able to take the initiative
Carry out all types of routine and general maintenance tasks:

Routine plumbing works (subject to skill set)
Routine electrical works (subject to skill set)
Routing carpentry works (subject to skill set)
Routine decorating works (subject to skill set)
General maintenance (for example: changing lightbulbs, fixing broken furniture, attending to minor leaks, installation of curtain tracks and curtains, lock repairs etc)

Furniture moving and room configuration changes
Miscellaneous duties within the Facilities Management department.
Report to the Facilities Management team any damages to, or malfunction of, the College facilities.
Understand and comply with the College’s Health & Safety policy and any other relevant policies.


Skills and Experience:
Have a good understanding of Health & Safety at Work legislation.
IT literate – able to demonstrate the ability to utilise MS Office packages such a Word and Outlook.
Well-organised with good time management.
Previous experience working within a College/University environment or similar institution would be an advantage.
Proven experience in general maintenance, or specialist skills in plumbing, electrical maintenance, painting/decorating and/or carpentry.
NVQ or equivalent in Maintenance Operations.

The College will support the jobholder to undertake any relevant training to enhance his/her work performance. The jobholder will receive any relevant on-the-job training as well as attending refresher courses as and when required in order to be able to fulfil the duties of the post.

The position is full-time (37½ hours per week) with some occasional overtime during peak periods. The core hours of work will normally be from 7:30am – 4pm but may be varied to meet operational requirements including occasional weekend work.


Salary £25,000-£26,500 per annum depending on skills and experience; generous holiday allowance and membership of the University pension scheme.
